St David's Day with Ted Egan and Ilid Jones

Vic Welsh presents its Grand Annual St David’s Day Concert at Robert Blackwood Hall, Monash University on 3 March 2012 at 7.30 pm.

This year we are delighted to welcome as our guest legendary Australian folk singer Ted Egan AO.  Ted, a former Administrator of the Northern Territory (2003 to 2007), is a writer and singer who has lived in the Northern Territory since 1950. For the last 40 years he has been writing and recording songs, filming and writing about the Australian people who represent the real ethos of this country. He has completed his 30th album of songs, is the presenter of 13 one hour documentary films titled This Land Australia and has written ten books. His wife Nerys Evans was born in Wales and immigrated to Western Australia in 1964 after graduating with a teaching degree, specialising in drama and sculpture, from Homerton College, Cambridge. As well as teaching for over 25 years in primary and secondary schools she has appeared at all the major folk festivals in Australia in various capacities. Ted and Nerys will bring their unique talents to the concert including the première of Connections to be sung in an Aboriginal language and in Welsh.

Our Musical Director, Faleiry Koczkar will be sharing baton duties with Ilid Anne Jones, who has been brought out from Wales for the first time by the Welsh Church. Ilid is the Musical Director of one of Wales's most celebrated and well known choirs, Hogia'r Ddwylan. Ilid was born and raised at Talysarn and started her musical career as accompanist to the local mixed choir whilst only 12 years old. She gained a B.Mus (Hons) at University of Wales, Bangor and an M.Phil on the life and work of operatic singer Leila Megane. Ilid is a piano and organ tutor, performance tutor, accompanist, music adjudicator and organist; she is a regular contributor to musical programmes on both radio and television.

Over more than thirty years the Victoria Welsh Choir has grown in numbers, in professionalism and is known for its musicality, its entertaining engagement with the audience and a sense of fun. In this time the choir has sung in every corner of Victoria as well as in NSW, ACT, Tasmania and WA. Overseas trips were made in 1995, 1999 and 2004 when the choir won third prize at the National Eisteddfod of Wales. In 2012 the choir will be touring Wales and England, culminating on July 7 in a 1000-voice event called the London Welsh Choir of the World as a lead-up event to the Olympics. Choirs will come from all continents and VicWelsh is one of five representing Australasia.

To mark our return to the eastern suburbs Vic Welsh will be offering patrons the very best tunes selected from the Welsh choral repertoire, from opera, popular numbers and songs from various musicals to coincide with the launch of a new CD. All your old favourites will be there, there will be the inevitable hwyl and nostalgia and it will be a wonderful night to remember. Adults $40, groups of 10+ & concessions $37, children under 15 $15
